A Tongue Lashing

hwms.coverart

Speed.  Disruption.  Innovation.

Not Duty.  Not Deliberation.   Not Honor.

Tech let us reordered our virtues.

Policy, if taken thoughtfully, makes us examine that reordering.

It may not solve anything but it makes us wonder if we’re doing things the right way.

Policy is never “Us” versus “The Government”.  It’s “Us” versus “Our Neighbors.”  And sometimes, those times when we don’t quite see all of our neighbors clearly, we can be vulnerable.

Anna, and Yasmin and Sulley, start working to get their client, the Internet Giant  “Talking and Shopping” a better position in Washington.  It doesn’t start well.  We get a tongue lashing, some cryptic advice, and a cup of tea from a slightly batty business woman.

Third episode in the new series begins “What Big Tech Doesn’t Know” from the audio drama “How We Manage Stuff.”

How Not to [Suck] at Consulting: Epilogue

hwms.coverart

The end.

It’s never quite what you expect.

In part, it’s really a beginning, though the beginning may not include you.

So we get only a hint of how the story will progress.  A family has been reconciled.  One troublesome employee has moved to the competition.  Another is still in the offices.

We have installed a new tech system but the benefits of that system are not obvious.  Not in revenue.  Not yet.

And so the series ends with the consulting team returning to their homes.  the client starting a new life, and How We Manage Stuff ready to progress to a new story.

The last part of our story on technology consulting.

But they don’t.

So it isn’t.

To Make A Point

hwms.coverartSometimes talk doesn’t work.

You’ve argued your case again and again. They hear your points, concede your argument but don’t accept your conclusion.

What do you do? And when do you do it?

And perhaps most importantly, what do you tell yourself about the risk involved? A key moment in the development of SidePocket.

Success & Temptation

hwms.coverart

What’s success?  A million a month? A million a month in revenue for a young software firm? (Remember, this story comes from the 1990s, Podcastland.) It’s not a bad start.

But what do you do with success? Throw a party? Lease a new office building? Build your technical staff? Listen to your board and take a stab at controlling the market?

Such is the problem faced by Vinny, the CEO of SidePocket. He doesn’t know what path to take even with the siren call of temptation sweeps through the air.

Leaving Detroit

hwms.coverartHow do you make decisions about tech companies – especially tech startups?  It’s not as easy, or as straightforward or as rational as we might like to think.  Over the next 7 episodes, we will look at our long term CTO, Vinny, make decisions about his original startup.

Vinny is making these decisions under duress, which doesn’t help.  His wife died just as he was starting his company.  No one trusts him to make good decisions.  And he’s not sure that he can make them himself.
