Keeping the Noise Down

If they wanted the same thing, then the decision would be easy.

But they don’t.

So it isn’t.

Our drama probes the decision making process in this episode.  It uncovers two, maybe three, sharp disagreements.  A split in the family.  An employee with her own agenda.  A consultant trying to do his best and to control the noise of the discussion.

Do you Indeed?

You don’t, and that”s the point.

None of know what we are doing when we going into a new organization.  We don’t know the history.  We don’t know the power structure.  Sometimes, we don’t even know the goals.  (And this will lead us to one of the key questions of this series: “Who are Leena and Klara?”)  Occasionally , we don’t even know ourselves.

Our podcast consulting team has beens starting work in Hamburg.  Anna’s replacing a key staff member and thinking about the future.  Trouble is, she does not know all that the client is thinking and might not know what to do if she did.

The Beginning is Chaos: Starting to Consult

hwms.coverart

How do you begin a consulting job?

In thunder, lightening or in rain?

It is chaotic at the start. You move to new offices, meet new people and start to appreciate new responsibilities. Our podcast has been hired by a German firm – a logistics provider to the coffee industry – to review their software systems and make recommendations. They arrive on site, after a long flight, and quickly discover that they did not fully appreciate the environment in which they would have to work.

Leaving Detroit

hwms.coverartHow do you make decisions about tech companies – especially tech startups?  It’s not as easy, or as straightforward or as rational as we might like to think.  Over the next 7 episodes, we will look at our long term CTO, Vinny, make decisions about his original startup.

Vinny is making these decisions under duress, which doesn’t help.  His wife died just as he was starting his company.  No one trusts him to make good decisions.  And he’s not sure that he can make them himself.

How Smart Is Your Phone?

hwms.coverart

It’s not a question of smarts. It’s a question of how it got that way. A lot of the smart apps are fairly straight forward – classic computing ideas repackaged in a clever case. You start taking the p hone apart and you a lot of ideas that aren’t that clever experience t for the effort that it took to get them into that little case.

So we ask the question “How?” And of course, Anna has her ideas. Maybe she’s right. Maybe she’s not. But someone had to decide why the map app was important and why it was smart.

Anna and her crew take apart the smartphone as part of her series on Artificial Intelligence.

Really a Real Professional – Introduction to Eta Kappa Nu

hwms.coverart

Is it real?

Move from a classroom to a professional office is real enough, though it proves to be something like a dream when you pass through it. The goal is real enough. Your past remains vivid in your mind. Your present standing is far from clear.

This week we look at an engineering Honors Society Eta Kappa Nu. It is a group that is designed to identify top engineering students and turn them into professionals. A noble job but its members spend a lot of time answering the question “Is it real?”

Cyberspace as Frontier: John Perry Barlow

hwms.coverart

He is remembered as as the founder of the Electronic Freedom Foundation. Or, alternatively, as a lyricist for the Grateful Dead and link between counterculture and technology. However, John Perry Barlow was the writer that argued that cyberspace was a frontier and that settling that frontier would require more thought that we were prepared to give.

Retrospective: CES 2017 & The Trillion Shot Latte

hwms.coverart

The story of the 2017 CES was drones. Drones to deliver packages. Drones to inspect oil pipelines. Drones to follow traffic. Drones to spy on you neighbor. One company offered drones to bring the last remnant of paper mail to beleaguered offices. Another upped the ante by suggesting that drones could bring food to those office workers who were either chained to their desks or intent on impressing their bosses with their dedication to work. The IT director of the podcast HWMS, Rohit, went one step further with his Autonomous Drone Latte Deliver System (ADLADS). Prior to the 2017 CES he demonstrated the system by draining Lake Mead and filling it with the trillion shot late.
