We Read It So You Don’t Have To: Innovators Dilemma

hwms.coverart

Life is busy.

There’s no time to read.

Or view YouTube videos.

Or even listen to podcasts.

So Maddie, the 8 year old entrepreneur an Bix, the Master Scrum Master, give you a thorough overview of Clayton Christensen’s masterwork, the Innovators Dilemma.

It is perhaps the most influential business book of our age.  It was the centerpiece of the late Dr. Christensen’s career.  It’s important cultural icon.

And, of course, Bix hasn’t read it.

And Maddie has read it too well.

Success & Temptation

hwms.coverart What’s success?  A million a month? A million a month in revenue for a young software firm? (Remember, this story comes from the 1990s, Podcastland.) It’s not a bad start. But what do you do with success? Throw a party? Lease a new office building? Build your technical staff? Listen to your board and take a stab at controlling the market? Such is the problem faced by Vinny, the CEO of SidePocket. He doesn’t know what path to take even with the siren call of temptation sweeps through the air.   Cast:

Getting Funds, Losing Friends

hwms.coverartFinding investments.  Never as easy as you think.   It’s not the technology.  It’s the business.  And the two are often far from the same thing.   And when you go from technology to business, you often find decisions that are hard to make.    Our Podcast CTO, Vinny, is building his first successful startup.  In the process, he is offered the opportunity he has long desired but it comes with a decision that he wished he did not have to face.   Cast:

Leaving Detroit

hwms.coverartHow do you make decisions about tech companies – especially tech startups?  It’s not as easy, or as straightforward or as rational as we might like to think.  Over the next 7 episodes, we will look at our long term CTO, Vinny, make decisions about his original startup.   Vinny is making these decisions under duress, which doesn’t help.  His wife died just as he was starting his company.  No one trusts him to make good decisions.  And he’s not sure that he can make them himself. Why Do We Code? (Computer Science Week)

hwms.coverart Why do we need to learn to code? Really. Can’t we just get an app and be done with it? A bunch of tech people are giving us a bunch of reasons to do it but they are, in all honesty, silly. Fix a web page? Add a function to your spreadsheet? Have these people never heard of the law of comparative advantage? In this episode, reposted from Computer Science Week, Maddie, our model of the perfect CEO gets to the point. We need to learn to code because that is how we now think. We live in a world of programs and code. Hence we need to understand what programs and code do to our thinking. Featuring:

  • Noah Masur as Rohit from IT

There’s a meeting.  It’s in the center of Silicon Valley deal-making.  The young CEO has assembled two confidants.  The questions begin. A CEO Prepares for Her Board

hwms.coverart Ok. Maddie is a bit unusual in the world of CEOs but she still needs to be ready for the politics of her Board. They’re not going to agree with her just because she has a clever tech idea and good presentation. You have to be ready. You have to think. [17218] Cast:
