17300: Technology and Organization and the Season Ahead

hwms.coverart

What is next? As our cast rests on the How We Manage Stuff yacht in Puget Sound, it ponders the future and describes some of the story lines for the next season. As always, our goal is to teach lessons that are easy to discuss but hard to live. Hence, we will be looking at issues involving artificial intelligence, Agile software development, startup governance, and big data. We will open our new office in India, and start the discussion of the side effects of smart machines.

The podcast How We Manage Stuff is grateful for the support and generosity of the United States Navy and the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. No actual nuclear submarines were harmed in the production of this episode.

17230: Knowledge Engineered Boyfriend

So what’s so bad about Knowledge Engineering? You’re just systematizing what your company knows. Just trying to bring some order to the chaos of the corporate world. However, it always requires a compromise. Squeezing a 7 and a half foot into a 6 and a half Louboutin, as Anna would say. In no situation are the problems of the knowledge engineered boyfriend. To ask the question of the ages, it is better to be a 70% with a 20% probability or a 20% boyfriend with a 70% probability.

17130: The Overhire & The Young Tech Employee

hwms.coverart

What do your young tech employees think about their organization? Especially those that are still learning about organizations and how they operate? We know that they have trouble putting their ideas into words and that they often talk about their concerns in an oblique way. (Though we all do that to some extent.) We also know that they are particularly sensitive to overhire, to a new supervisor that restricts their freedom.

This episode explores some of those issues, through the eyes of Rohit, our IT Guy. Rohit has recently realized that the newly hired Bix-the-Scrum-Master is actually his boss.
