17145: Building a Staff for a Tech Company – Bits & People

hwms.coverart

It’s like a blind date. Only worse. With a date you have the presence of hope shackled only by the vaguest of required qualifications. But like a date, a tech company staff has to be created today with the changing future ever in mind. And the results are not always pretty.

Maddie is hiring the staff for her startup with Vinny receiving, but not approving, her ideas. Steps are tentative. Plans are in process. Perhaps the worse part of it is that she is trying to launch a new service and isn’t completely clear about how that service will organize her customers – or her community, if you wish to take an idealist view of things.

In the process, Maddie has to face her old nemesis and ask “How does a real CEO behave?”

16405: Seattle & the Problems of an Innovative Organization

hwms.coverart

This fall, the podcast moves to Seattle. Such moves keep us flexible, agile, ready to face any task. Well, perhaps any task. There is this problem with slugs. However, we’re in Seattle to consider the attributes of an innovative organization. In the process, we’re looking at four attributes: Vision, Refinement, Socialization, and Decision-making. But to do that, we have to settle into our office. A local property manager is some help (though not much) and our hardworking intern puts down her box of material to deliver the lyrical speech “Rohit that Slug had a mother.”

16337: Governments and Innovative Technology, A Binge

hwms.coverart

What do we expect to learn about innovation from a government? Why did we take the podcast to Washington? And why did we take an office next to the Capitol Power Plant, other than the obvious benefits that the rents are cheaper than the tonier stuff and yet we are still near the center of the action? All of this will be discussed in our binge episode, which combines three shorter pieces:

  • Who Are We and What Do We Do?
  • Open Source Discussions
  • It’s Agile but It’s Not Software

A Binge episode for the end of April. Three combined podcasts. The first talks about context, how we think about development questions and whether our office manager has offended the host. The second: Position, Status & Function. The three elements of human organization. The last is a discussion of open source development and how open source affects our organizations.

16265: Evelyn Hosts a Binge

hwms.coverart

Time for a Binge. Need something as background for your workout? Or as something to fill a long commute? We have three pieces pulled together in this podcast, all hosted by Evelyn, our Business Manager.

We begin with a visit to the Consumer Technology Show in Las Vegas. Drones were big then. Little did we know.

Next, we attend an all hands office staff meeting. We discuss the themes for the podcast and Anna makes a plea to Elon Musk.

Finally, in something new, we have an essay on Disruptive Technologies from IEEE Computer.

A binge of three episodes.  A binge for your workout.  A binge for your commute.  Or just a binge to catch up on the episodes that you missed.

This binge has three episodes from the fall.  In the first Don Shafer of the Athens group talks about deadlines and why software projects can run late.  In the second , Rohit our overly enthusiastic IT guy, explains why Walter P Shewhart, the inventor of the cycle of continuous improvement is so important.  In the last, Pierre Bourque tells us about the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge and why you should know about it, even if you don’t use it.
